Illustrative issues are the use and role of calculators, the promotion of number sense and personal calculating methods, the adoption of a constructivist approach, the findings of international comparisons such as; program for international student assessment (PISA) and trends in international mathematics and science study (TIMSS), and the imposition of a set numeracy hour by government.
